The First Mass-Produced Car.... kind of

Ever since August of 1955, when William Cobb of the General Motors Corporation unveiled his “sunmobile”, companies around the world have been working towards the first production ready solar powered car. In late November of 2022, Dutch startup Lightyear has begun production of its road-ready Lightyear 0. They plan on initially producing just one car per week, then gradually scaling up production in early 2023. The car won’t be mass-market, however, as the startup only plans to create 150 0s with a $260,000 price tag.

So, what’s so special about this new production-ready car?

Lightyear highlighted how owners will not have to charge the car for months, and when they do, they don’t have to wait for a long time to charge up a large battery pack. This process is expedited by the fact that the car is able to recover up to 6.2 miles an hour. The company hopes that this allows to the 0 to leapfrog the grid and have increased independence from charging infrastructure.
